Chesapeake Urology
Located at Merritt’s mixed-use development Buckingham, a two-story, 52,420-square-foot building, Chesapeake Urology required a dual-functional space, and Merritt had only 10 months to build the core, shell and complete the tenant fit-out.
Chesapeake Urology was uniquely constructed so exam rooms and offices were separate from the tenant’s surgery center and out-patient facility. Equipped with high-end finishes, custom light fixtures and integrated office furniture, surgery rooms have lead walls to shield radiation. In addition, fiber-reinforced walls and seamless floors reduce the potential for bacterial growth.
Slated for LEED Silver certification from the U.S. Green Building Council, design requirements were prioritized to reduce energy consumption by over 14% annually. Utilizing closed cell spray foam and batt insulation between the 6” structural metal stud walls, the wall section achieved an R-value greater than 30, far more than required by code.
The roof features a 37 kW solar photovoltaic system, generating nearly 7% of the annual energy use of the building, and a solar hot water collector. Also included are fuel-efficient parking spaces, planting spaces to reduce irrigation water use by over 50%, LED lighting, and sustainably forested wood.
